Demographics
The Gardner Institute provides demographic decision support to the Utah State Legislature and Office of the Governor. We produce population estimates and projections, as well as applied demographic research focused on Utah. We represent the state in work with the Census Bureau, including the State Data Center Program and Federal State Cooperatives for Population Estimates and Projections. We work with the Census Bureau in production, distribution, and analysis of their product.

Utah population reaches 3,404,760 on July 1, 2022, driven mostly by net migration
December 1, 2022 (Salt Lake City) – July 1, 2022 estimates, produced by the Utah Population Committee, indicate a total population of 3,404,760, adding 61,242 residents to the state over one year. The midyear reference date of these estimates reflects the economy opening and thriving in the middle of the pandemic, leading up to a turning point in the economic picture and resulting in a different growth trajectory in the latter half of 2022. This information supplements the regularly-produced baseline long-term planning projections with alternative plausible futures for the state and counties. The figure highlights the range for the total population statewide, with the low scenario coming in at 4.4 million residents in 2060 and the high at 6.3 million.
