The Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute announces its next Newsmaker Breakfast, a monthly event highlighting important issues impacting Utahns.

As one of the fastest-growing states in the nation, Utah is fueled by innovative startups and vibrant business ventures that create jobs, enhance community well-being, and contribute to a dynamic economic landscape. The November Newsmaker Breakfast will delve into the factors that foster entrepreneurial success and examine how policy can support sustainable growth within our local economy.

We are thrilled to welcome special guest, Dr. Erick Zwick, Professor of Economics and Finance at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Dr Zwick specializes in entrepreneurship, exploring how public policy affects the formation and success of new businesses. He uses innovative data analysis to understand challenges faced by small and medium-sized firms.

Dr. Zwick will present new research describing what drives successful entrepreneurship, tracing influences from childhood environment to early career experiences and wealth accumulation. His findings highlight the crucial role of early labor market experiences in fostering high-impact entrepreneurs, suggesting that removing pipeline barriers could unlock potential talent.

Dr. Zwick will be joined by Troy D’Ambrosio, Vice President for Innovation at the University of Utah and Executive Director of the Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute, who will react to the research and discuss efforts underway at the U and in Utah to support successful entrepreneurship in the economy.

The conversation is co-sponsored by the University of Utah’s Marriner S. Eccles Institute and will be moderated by Gardner Institute director Natalie Gochnour. Media are invited to attend and ask questions.
